Miss January 2007 Interview
BrianX Magazine:
What
were you like as a kid?
Reid Speed: I was a very active kid. I played a lot of sports: soccer, lacrosse,
basketball, squash. I always loved music. I played violin from a young age, then piano. On weekends my dad used to take me to the
opera. At the time it was embarrassing, since I really couldn't relate
to the other kids. Of course I'm grateful for it now.
What about your high school years?
I was a tomboy in high school. I always had guy friends because I was
into getting into trouble, skateboarding , playing in the woods and breaking things. Then
I started raving, and of course I got teased for the big pants and such, but it
became a cool thing to do pretty soon after. When I first got my turntables my friends all said
I sucked (and I did)! But I never cared what people thought of me, I just did my thing.
How did you get into DJing?
The first time I saw a DJ play (DJ Dan, Colorado, summer of '94) I knew
that's what I needed to be doing. It took a couple of years to save up money for my tables, but my senior year of high school
I got them, and never looked back.
Favorite music to DJ?
Drum & Breaks!
You've played in clubs and bars in the US, Canada, Mexico and more.
What's your favorite place to DJ?
My favorite place to play right now is here in LA, at the Vanguard. My
partner Josh David & I do a breaks party there once a month called
Breakdown.
What has been the best experience?
The best part of my job is making as many people as I can feel great
and forget about their problems for a little while, let them just lose
it and go to a happy, positive place while dancing their asses off!
Worst experience?
Worst experience in general is when I do my job, people are happy, and
then a shady promoter refuses to pay.
Have you been recognized in public?
I have been recognized a couple of times in airports... but no, not really.
What changes in your life would you say are due to your 'fame'?
Having clothing and equipment sponsors rocks! I feel extremely fortunate to have support in the form of awesome gear from Matix,
needles and mics from Shure, and mixers from Pioneer.
What's the most common question that people ask you?
"How does it feel to be a female in a male dominated
industry?"
Pet Peeves?
When the sound guy isn't doing his job, and I know what's wrong, but
I get the "that's nice sweetie" blow off because guys don't believe that
I know how to make it sound right.
Are you a big partier?
I am not a big partier. 2 drinks and I'm done!
Name anyone, alive or dead, who you would love to
meet.
Jim Morrison & Kurt Cobain.
What do you want the world to know about you?
I love nothing more than to make you lose it on the dancefloor.
Notable upcoming projects?
I have a single with Queensyze entitled "Danger" coming out next year
on Phonomental, and my artist album is set for release in April 2007
on Ohm Resistance.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Rocking the rest of the world!
Where are you from/live now?
Originally from NYC, live in Santa Monica, CA now.
