Website History

Yes, believe it or not, many people actually write in, asking about the origins of this website. So, here it is…

What was to become BrianX.com began as a personal website and blog in 1997. At the time, there was no such thing as a “blog” as we know them today, making it one of the first blogs in Internet history. Early on, the term “live journal” was popular and the site had a clear live journal that was updated continually.

The original website was hosted at AOL (1997-2000). No one could remember the AOL web address so the decision was made to get a simpler name. Brian.com was taken, and BrianX.com sounded easy enough. As literally tens of millions of visitors have now come to the site, the name now seems to be an unfortunate one from a marketing perspective but that’s what we’re stuck with. While many people thinkg it’s a cool name, others think the name is a little lame, but hey, is “Twitter” any better?! Back in the 1990s when the website got started, no one expected it to be anything beyond a simple site for a few friends to post photos and have fun with.

As the site’s popularity grew, so did the number of contributors. BrianX Magazine took shape and was launched in its present format as an online magazine in December 2002.

In June 2009, the website was re-launched with a major change in its appearance. This fresh new look is more suitable to today’s expectations of what a site should look like. The content of this website remains extremely popular, with hundreds of thousands of page views per month. Now that the latest incarnation of the website has launched, it is expected to grow much more quickly than it has in some time.

The site is now run by multiple people.
